"I made this lino print of Joan of Arc a few days after seeing the play I, Joan which interprets Joan as figure of trans history in an incredibly powerful and loving way. After leaving the theatre I felt so seen and understood, and I decided to put some of those feelings into art. The quote included in the lino print is from the 1902 transcript of Joan's trial, and to me it represents the trans strength and courage to fight and be true to yourself despite the whole world being against you."
Andreas' linocut would make a great coat of arms for transgender resistance against cisnormativity. Paired with the words that Joan of Arc spoke before the Doctors and the Bishops of the Church on March 17th, 1471 - we find ourselves with a perfect family symbol, courageous motto and all. Joan of Arc is an inspiring figure for many - Andreas manages to capture the eternally complicated emotion of solidarity and courage with a prominent but mysterious trans historical figure.
