Post-it Note Name
My middle name is Rose
But if I had any other name
Would the atoms constructing my existence remain the same?
People seem to think
That I’m losing my true nature
But I’ve been shedding my skin for a while now
Pixels turning monochrome
And my silhouette darkens
Into static syllables
I don’t know how long I’ve been wearing
A post-it note identifier
Because I don’t think it started out that way
And for others it isn’t like a post-it note
It’s something like blood sifting through their heart
And for others still it's a grave
Something cold and deep and shadowed
But for me this post-it note used to be
The ends of my hair and the tips of my eyelashes
It used to be the roots of my teeth and the shadows of my joint sockets
But now it’s a post-it note
That’s been folded in a million places
With pronouns and nicknames written in the margins
And there are so many times
When this note unfurls off the tip of my tongue
Quicker than I can say
“Hello my name is…”
But more recently
I’ve been looking at who I’ll be in fifty years
And I think that person will have this post-it note
Tucked away in their back pocket
So old that it’s lost its stickiness
When I’m fifty years older
People won’t call me what’s on the old post-it note anymore
Because new syllables flow from my lips
I’m saying “Hello I am…”
Your mentor
An author
An artist
A road not yet travelled down
It’s nice to meet you
My name is─
"I wrote this poem to express my feelings about outgrowing the name I was given at birth. I was, and still am, grappling with how I feel about people using that name compared to chosen names.
The poem's first few lines are inspired by a song called "Rose" by The Oh Hellos. Lyrically, I appreciate how this song engages with the idea of names reflecting a person's essence. In the end, the poem is left open-ended to question how a single name could encompass all of the different parts of myself.
I hope you enjoy it."
